​The Inaugural Commencement Ceremony was held on Saturday November 15, 2014 at 2 p.m. at The University of Oklahoma ​OCCE Forum Building – Conference Room A1704 Asp Ave.

​​The Oklahoma State Youth Poet Laureate  program
aims to identify young writers and leaders who are committed to civic and community engagement, poetry and performance, education and human relations across Oklahoma. 

DEADLINE HAS PASSED. The application window is now closed.

During the months of August, September and October of 2014, OLAA accepted submissions from young poets, rappers, leaders and activists ages 14-19 from across Oklahoma interested in representing Oklahoma as the inaugural OK State Youth Poet Laureate. A group of esteemed judges will choose 12 Finalists, all given the distinction of "Oklahoma Youth Poet Ambassador," and we will select one teen to be honored with the title of "Oklahoma Youth Poet Laureate" at the Oklahoma State Youth Poet Laureate Commencement Performance on Saturday November 15th at 2 p.m. at The University of Oklahoma, Norman Campus, OCCE Forum Building – Conference Room A. 

Along with winning the prestigious title of "Oklahoma State Youth Poet Laureate," the winning poet will also win a book deal from Penmanship Books to publish their first collection of poems, as well as a library tour. The Oklahoma State Youth Poet Laureate and the Oklahoma Poet Ambassadors will have numerous opportunities and platforms to share their powerful voices, their leadership, and love of Oklahoma at numerous events across the state. 

Contest Rules & How to Apply:
1. Applicants must be current residents of Oklahoma, and between the ages of 14-19 years old. 

2. Starting August 11th 2014, please submit 5 original poems / raps /  performances (and / or YouTube Links to your poems, though videos are NOT required). 

3. Submit at least one poem that speaks to the theme of "Education and/or Youth Leadership" in Oklahoma. 

4. Include RESUME material with your name, address, phone # and email, AS WELL AS details regarding all of your accomplishments, community service, after school programs, volunteer experiences and awards. If you prefer a sample sheet for this, please click HERE and just complete the online form. 

5. ONCE you are ready, you can submit your documents via email to POET@OLAA.ORG, or simply apply online by clicking  HERE. Your entire application is due October 20th. The 2014 Oklahoma Youth Poet Laureate will win a book deal from Penmanship Books, conduct a reading tour and make special appearances throughout Oklahoma for one (1) year.
